Project Background

1. The Shanghai–Nantong Yangtze River Bridge is situated on the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River between Nantong and Zhangjiagang, connecting the cities of Nantong and Zhangjiagang. It is a key project for the entire Shanghai–Nantong Railway, with a total length of 11,072 metres. The bridge features a steel truss cable-stayed structure with a main span of 1,092 metres, making it the world’s longest-span combined road-rail cable-stayed bridge and the world’s first combined road-rail bridge to exceed a span of 1,000 metres.

2. The bridge features a rigid-beam, flexible-arch structure with a main span of 336 metres, and the alignment accuracy is controlled to within a few millimetres.

3. The main tower of the bridge stands 325 metres tall, equivalent to a building of over 100 storeys, and bears an axial load of 300,000 tonnes. The foundation of the main tower employs a rectangular caisson design with rounded corners, covering a floor area of 5,100 square metres—equivalent to the combined area of 12 basketball courts—making it the largest bridge caisson structure in the world. The caisson bears the entire load of the bridge and is truly the ‘anchor that holds the sea in place’.
